Seven Trojans earn softball recognition

Seven players from Hills?boro High School?s Class 2-1A state runner-up team have received recognition from Central Kansas League coaches.

Four Trojans were picked for the all-league first team, two for the second team and one received honorable mention.

The team?s lone senior, Danae Bina, was picked for the first team at shortstop. Joining her were three juniors: Bradli Nowak at catcher, Emily Jost as an outfielder and Julie Sinclair as a pitcher.

Bina led the Trojans in several offensive categories, including batting average (.585), hits (48), runs scored (46), slugging percentage (.927) and stolen bases (24). Defensively, she handled 36 fielding opportunities without committing an error.

Nowak led the team in runs batted in (47), home runs (7) and doubles (16) and hit .420.

Jost hit .449, with 35 hits, 17 RBIs and 20 runs scored.

Sinclair finished the year with a 13-0 record, 135 strikeouts and an earned-run average of 0.586 over 83.2 innings. She struck out a school-record 17 hitters in the Trojans? regional championship game against Inman. As a hitter, Sinclair compiled a .493 average with 37 hits and 28 RBIs.

Chosen for the CKL second team were Madison Klein at second base and Allison Weber at third base.

Klein was second on the team in hitting (.571), slugging percentage (.857), hits (44) and RBIs (44) and had a fielding percentage of .981.

Weber batted .439, with 36 hits, 13 RBIs and 41 runs scored. As a pitcher, she went 9-3 with an ERA of 2.09 over 60.1 innings.

Junior Shannon Heiser received honorable mention at first base. She batted .301 with 18 RBIs and 16 runs scored.

Hillsboro (23-3 overall) finished second in the CKL behind Pratt (17-1) with a 16-2 league record. The Green?backs went 22-3 overall and won the Class 4-Division II state championship. Qualifying for the 3A state tournament this spring were Haven (19-5, 14-4) and Lyons (17-9, 12-6).
