Seven area players feted for HOA softball

Heart of America league coaches have released the 2014 all-league softball teams, with athletes from Marion and Canton-Galva represented.

Four Marion Warriors received recognition.

Senior pitcher Megan Richmond was a second-team pick. She threw 80.1 innings with an earned-run average of 4.27. She struck out 75 batters.

At the plate, Richmond batted .315 with 17 hits and 13 RBIs.

?Megan Richmond was a great senior leader, as well as a leader on the mound,? coach Jennifer Felvus said. ?She had a strong bat, great base-running skills, and was a threat anywhere she was on the field.?

Freshman shortstop Shelby Felvus also was named to the second team. She batted .439 with 25 hits and 15 RBIs.

?Shelby?s speed and overall instinct for the game proved to be very beneficial for us this season,? Coach Felvus said. ?She filled the role of leadoff hitter for us very well, carrying the highest batting average on the team.?

Sophomore outfielder Shyla Harris was a second-team selection. She hit .333 with 13 hits and eight RBIs.

?Shyla Harris really came on to the scene a few outings into the season, but came on strong and never looked back,? Coach Felvus said. ?She has great abilities as an outfielder to read the ball off the bat, and covers the ground behind her, which I believe to be one of the most difficult things to do. She carries a big bat, and is definitely a doer at the plate.?

Sophomore infielder Kayla Kroupa received honorable mention at first base. She batted .381 and drove in 19 runs on 24 hits.

?Kayla is a strong bat in the line-up, carrying the second highest batting average for the season,??Coach Felvus said. ?I don?t think many onlookers realize how valuable Kayla is to us on the field. She is a graceful first baseman that makes all of her work and adjustments look easy.?

For Canton-Galva, senior outfielder Jennifer Likes and senior utility Erika Smith were named to the second team. Senior infielder Lauren Ballantyne received honorable mention.
