Competing against some of the toughest runners from small to mid-size schools from Kansas and beyond, Hillsboro?s Emily Sechrist finished third Sat?urday in the Rim Rock Farm Classic near Lawrence.

The Trojan junior covered the challenging 4-kilometer course in 15 minutes, 49 seconds, less than one second behind the second-place finisher from Missouri, and 10 seconds behind the winner from Girard, a Class 4A school in southeast Kansas.

The Trojans ran under abnormal conditions resulting from rain earlier in the morning.

?The course conditions slowed everyone?s times, but it was good that Emily moved up to third place?one higher than last year?which is very good consid?ering the quality of competition,? coach Stuart Holmes said.

The rain affected more than the course.

?Not only was the course muddy, but we spent over 45 minutes in the vehicle, slowly covering the last couple of miles on the road with hundreds of other vehicles,? he said. ?We try hard to get to meets early, so our athletes still had over 30 minutes to warm up, but I know they felt rushed.?

Karyn Leihy ran the course in 18:35, placing 87th among 238 runners. Mary Leihy placed 234th in 24:47.

For the boys, J.D. Schmidt placed 218th among 250 runners in the boys? 5-k race with a time of 21:34. Jona?than Hinerman was 222nd in 21:45.

SE of Saline?Emily Sechrist won her third race in three starts, and teammate Karyn Leihy medalled for the second race in a row at the Southeast of Saline Invita?tional last Thursday.

Sechrist completed the 4-kilometer course in 15 minutes, 28 seconds for a 47-second victory over her nearest competitor.

Leihy, meanwhile, finished 19th among the 68 runners in 17:46.

For the boys, Avery Franz placed 54th out of 95 runners, covering the 5-k course in 21:01. J.D. Schmidt was 65th in 21:52.

In the junior varsity race, freshman Jonathan Hiner?man placed fifth in a field of 72 runners with a time of 20:42. Lydia Kliewer placed ninth in the girls? JV 4-k race in 20:45.

Coming? The Trojans will run at the Berean Invita?tional Thursday at Harvey County East Park. Races begin at 4 p.m.
