Sechrist lowers school record at Peabody run

Emily Sechrist shows the form that enabled her to break her school record at Peabody. She ran the 4-k course in 15 minutes flat, 16 seconds faster than her previous record.Emily Sechrist broke her school-record time by 16 seconds on the way to winning the 4-kilometer girls? race at the Peabody cross-country meet Thursday.

The Hillsboro junior crossed the finish line in 15 minutes even; her closest competitor was just over 1 minute behind her.

?Normally records are lowered just a few seconds at a time, but she served notice that she is ready to run really fast this year?15 flat is an outstanding time,? said coach Stuart Holmes.

Classmate Karyn Leihy enjoyed the best finish of her career by placing fifth among 46 runners in 17:28.09.

?Karyn put together an excellent race,? Holmes said. ?Obviously, Peabody is a flat course compared to Wamego, but still she had such a big improvement that it shows her conditioning and confidence are headed in the right direction.?

For the boys, Avery Franz earned a medal by placing 14th in the 5-k boys? race in 19:19. J.D. Schmidt, battling illness, placed 27th in 20:24.

In junior varsity races, Jonathan Hinerman placed 11th in 21:25 among the boys and Mary Leihy (23:29) and Morganne Hamm (23:30) placed 11th and 12th, respectively among the girls.

Coming?The Trojans were scheduled to run at Southeast of Saline Tuesday and then will compete at Rim Rock Farm near Lawrence Saturday.
