Scheduling issues will give Trojan Classic a new look

Challenged by scheduling difficulties, the Hillsboro Trojan Classic will have a little different look this year.

The format will include a partial bracket for both girls’ and boys’ teams, as well as a few schools that will fill voids in the bracket for on or two game only.

Girls’ tournament

In the first round of the girls’ tournament, No. 1 seed Clay Center (6-1) will face Eureka at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Tabor gym. The game is Eurek’s only appearance during the tournament.

Clay Center, meanwhile, will automatically advance to the semifinal game at 6 p.m. Friday. The team will play the winner of No. 4 seeded Sunrise Academy (9-4) and No. 5 seeded Hillsboro (5-3), who will have played at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the HHS gym.

On the lower side of the girls’ bracket, No. 2 Hesston (6-2) will play No. 7 Republic County (1-7) at 6 p.m. Tues­day at the Tabor gym.

The remaining first-round game will have No. 3 Riley County (5-2) squaring off against No. 6 Holcomb (4-3) at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the HHS gym.

In the second round for the girls, Clay Center will play the winner of the game between Sunrise and Hills­boro at 6 p.m. Friday in the HHS gym.

The winner of Hesston vs. Republic County will take on the winner of Riley County and Holcomb 3 p.m. Friday at the HHS gym. The two winners of those games will meet in the championship game at 5:45 p.m. Saturday in the HHS gym.

The losing teams from Friday’s games will play for third place at 2:30 p.m. in the HHS gym.

On the consolation side of the bracket, Topeka Corner­stone will play the loser between Sunrise and Hills­boro at 4:30 p.m. at Tabor.

The losing team between Republic County and Hess­ton, and the loser between Riley County and Holcomb will play at 6 p.m. Friday in the Tabor gym.

On Saturday, the winners of those two consolation games will meet for fifth place at 11:30 a.m. in the HHS gym. The loser of those consolation games will receive a bye for seventh place.

Boys’ tournament

The boys’ tournament will be a combination of bracket play and pool play.

The boys’ bracket will have four seeded teams: No. 1 Hesston (7-1) will play No. 4 Riley County at 7:30 p.m. in the Tabor gym, and No. 2 Holcomb (6-1) will play Republic County (4-4) at 4:30 p.m. in the HHS gym.

Meanwhile, Hillsboro (7-1), Sunrise Christian (7-4) and Clay Center (1-6) will play each other in pool-play fashion. Hillsboro will play Sunrise at 7 p.m. Monday in the HHS gym, Sunrise will play Clay Center at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the HHS gym. and Hillsboro will play Clay Center at 7:30 p.m. Friday in the HHS gym.

On Saturday, Eureka boys will return to play the fourth-place team from the bracket at 1 p.m. in the middle school gym for seventh place. The third-place team from the bracket will play the third-place team from the pool at 1 p.m. in the HHS gym for fifth place.

The second-place team from bracket play will play the second-place team from pool play at 4 p.m. in the HHS gym.

The first-place team from bracket play will play the first-place team from pool play for the tournament championship at 7:39 p.m. in the HHS gym.
