Roth leads HHS at CKL tournament

Caroline Roth led the Hillsboro tennis team with a second-place finish at the Central Kansas League Tournament in Lindsborg Saturday.

Roth came in as the second seed at No. 1 singles. She won her first two matches, defeating Katricia Hirsh of Nickerson, 6-0, 6-0, and Amanda Lessard of Larned, 6-3, 6-1. Roth had defeated both girls earlier in the season.

In the finals, she faced Hesston’s Morgan Holopirek, losing 6-1, 6-0, to the top-seed.

“Overall, she played well and was efficient in her first two matches, keeping points short and hitting winners when she needed to,” coach Bob Woelk said.

The Trojans’ No. 1 doubles team of Ellian Weisbeck and Shelby Johnson continued to struggle. After going winless at Ellsworth on Tuesday, they were once again blanked at the CKL meet but finished eighth with the help of a bye.

The Trojan duo lost to M. Haas and K. Sanger of Larned, 6-1, 6-7 (7-5), 6-2, in the second round after receiving a bye as the sixth seed. They then lost to G. Bryant and K. Jenkins of Lyons, 9-7, and L. Beat and F. Fenato of Kingman, 9-6.

The backside matches were nine-game pro sets.

“These girls continue to fight inconsistency,” Woelk said. “The second set against Larned was one of the best they have played all year. But, they then lost two subsequent matches they should perhaps have won.”

In No. 2 doubles, Kayla Gunn and Abby Fryhover won their first varsity match of the year, defeating Nickerson’s T. Brown and J. Coonce, 9-7, for ninth place.

They lost their first match to M. Kauffman and C. Reichenberger of Haven, 9-2, and Kingman’s K. Hanbert and A. Flickner, 9-4.

“I was proud of the way they closed out the match against Nickerson,” Woelk said. “It could have gone either way. These two girls have worked hard all year to improve, so it was nice to get them a win in their first season of playing. Since we have no junior varsity to speak of, it is a steep learning curve.”

Hesston won the league title with 90 points, followed by Smoky Valley (75), Larned (66), Hoisington 46), Kingman (42), Pratt (40), Hillsboro (32), Lyons (28), Nickerson (19) and Haven (12).
