MHS wins Peabody-Burns tourney

>Jessi Lewman attacks the net, giving Marion its first point versus Chase County Saturday via kill. Marion defeated the Bulldogs in two sets and went on to win the Peabody-Burns tournament with a 5-0 record. The Marion volleyball team swept five opponents in its season-opener Saturday to win the Peabody-Burns tournament.

Marion rolled through pool play, defeating Chase County, 25-14, 25-23; Central Burden, 27-25, 25-16; and Hartford, 25-9, 25-10.

The Warriors defeated Wichita Classical in the semifinals, 25-16, 25-11; then defeated Solomon in the championship, 25-15, 25-15.

Coach Brea Campbell said she was impressed with the way her team handled competition in its first outing of the season.

“I always get nervous about the first time out, but these girls handled themselves well, adjusting to the different levels of competition that we saw,” she said. “Our hitting took a little while to fully come together, but our blocking looked great, and the girls were very scrappy, which is always exciting to see.”

Campbell said the improvement she’d like most to see is for the Warriors to take control of games from the start.

“Sometime it takes them a little while to get going,” she said. “We aren’t going to be able to do that against some of the teams in our league.”

As the team prepares for Heart of America league play next week, Campbell said the tournament was a good precursor.

“I am really happy that we got to start our season with this tournament,” she said. “Last year, we had to jump right in to Sedgwick and Hutchinson Trinity without having played a single game, and that was pretty hard on the girls.

“I think this year we are going to go into those matches next Tuesday extremely confident. These girls are great competitors, and I know they want to continue the undefeated streak for league play.”

Coming—Marion will travel to Sedgwick Tuesday and will play at Centre Sept. 9.
