MHS wins Centre tourney

The Marion High School volleyball team avenged a pool play loss to Little River by hammering the Indians in the first-place match, claiming first place at the Centre High School Invitational tournament Saturday.

The Warriors thumped Hope (25-7, 25-6) and edged Centre (22-25, 25-19, 25-18) but lost to Little River (23-25, 25-18, 20-25) in pool play. But Marion raised its game for bracket play, knocking off Herington (25-21, 25-22) to earn a rematch with Little River.

In the final, Little River never stood a chance, as the Warriors rolled to 25-16, 25-15 wins.

Julia Zeiner and Lindsay Hett were both named to the all-tournament team.

Zeiner notched 10 kills and five aces against Centre, six kills and two aces against Hope, and nine kills against Herington.

Zeiner and Kayley Heerey each had 10 kills in the first meeting with Little River. Zeiner had four kills and three aces in the title round.

Hett had six kills and 10 assists against Centre, three kills and five assists against Hope, three kills and eight assists against Herington, and seven kills and 21 assists in five games against Little River.

Coming?Marion hosted a triangular Sept. 16 and will host a tournament Saturday morning.
