MHS Warriors runners-up at Spikefest

The Marion volleyball team was tournament runners-up at the ninth-annual Marion Spikefest Saturday.

Marion cruised through pool play with a 3-0 record, defeating Centre (25-18, 25-16), Halstead (25-15, 25-15) and Sedgwick (25-12, 25-22).

The Warriors faced Lyons in the semifinals and earned a two-set win (25-15, 25-12).

That pitted Marion against the No. 1 seeded Wichita Defenders. The Warriors lost that battle in two sets (25-20, 25-22). It was Marion?s first loss of the season.

Marion triangular?Marion kept its undefeated streak alive with a pair of wins over Bennington and Hutchinson Trinity Tuesday.

Marion began with a 2-0 win over Bennington.

The Warriors trailed at the start of Set 1, but tied it, 8-8, after a Kourtney Hansen kill. Marion gained distance, 13-9, thanks in part to kills by Elizabeth Meyer and Shelby Felvus, but Bennington took a 16-15 lead. The teams remained within three points the rest of the way, with Marion claiming the 25-23 victory.

Set 2 was also highly contested. With the teams locked at 19, Marissa Jacobson and Felvus recorded back-to-back kills to put the Warriors in front for good. Marion won, 25-22.

Against Hutchinson Trinity in Set 1, Marion turned a 12-12 tie into a 19-12 advantage, and Marion was not particularly threatened en-route to a 25-17 victory.

In Set 2, Marion fell behind early and trailed by as many as six, including 14-8 and later, 16-10, after a pair of kills by Trinity?s 6-footer Rhiannon Vieyra. The Warriors went on a 9-2 run after that to take the lead, 19-18. It was a back-and-forth battle from there.

Marshelle Mermis and Marissa Jacobson had consecutive kills and Marion pulled away to win, 25-20.

?I think they wanted to show that they have a lot to prove,? coach Brea Campbell said. ?They knew we were going to have a big crowd. They knew we were going to have a big student section. They wanted to put on a good show. They wanted to walk out 8-0, and that?s exactly what we did.?

Coming?Marion (12-1) was slated to play at Sedgwick Tuesday and at Moundridge Thursday.
