MHS volleyball wins Heart of America tournament

The Marion volleyball team went undefeated to win the Heart of America tournament Saturday.

Marion began the day by defeating Inman (25-20, 25-17) and Bennington (25-9, 25-20).

Moundridge took the Warriors to three sets. The Wildcats claimed Set 1, 25-15, but Marion battled back to win Set 2, 28-26. The Warriors emerged victorious with a 25-21 win in Set 3.

?Moundridge has become one of our biggest competitors,??coach Brea Campbell said. ?They are a great team.?

Marion defeated Ell-Saline (25-23, 25-16) to conclude pool play with a 4-0 record.

As the winner of Pool 1, Marion faced Sedgwick in the semifinals. The Cardinals were runners-up in Pool 2, whose only loss to that point was to Hutchinson Trinity.

Marion earned a 25-21 victory in Set 1 and followed with a 25-17 win in Set 2 to advance to the championship game against Hutchinson Trinity.

The Celtics burst to a 7-1 lead in Set 1, but Marion came back to win, 25-17. In Set 2, Marion faced a 24-16 deficit but scored 10 straight points to win, 26-24.

?I, along with everyone else in the building, was thinking we were about to go into three games,? Campbell said. ?But these girls held them (at 24) and came back to win the game and entire match. It was absolutely insane, which is exactly what a championship match should be like.??

Marion improved to 33-3 on the season, becoming the first team in program history to reach 30 wins.

Berean Academy?Marion picked up three more victories Tuesday.

Marion opened the night by defeating Peabody-Burns (25-11, 25-16).

Then, in a rematch with Remington, the Warriors earned a three-set victory, just as they did two weeks prior.

The Broncos won Set 1, 25-19, but Marion bounced back to win Set 2, 25-23. Marion polished the victory with a 25-19 win in Set 3.

In the final game of the night, Marion defeated Berean Academy (25-12, 25-19) to improve to 27-3 overall.

Coming?Marion (33-3) will travel to Southeast of Saline for a Class 3A sub-state Saturday.

In addition to the Warriors and the host school, teams in the field include Council Grove, Halstead, Hesston, Hutchinson Trinity, Lyons and Sedgwick.
