MHS Volleyball team plays home tourney

The Marion volleyball team hosted its home tournament Saturday, going 0-3 in pool play against Eureka (25-22, 20-25, 25-16), Sedgwick (25-19, 25-14) and Wichita Collegiate (27-25, 25-18).

?We won the first game by playing solid defense and aggressive hitting in our front row,? coach Jim Versch said. ?I really felt at this team had a made a 180 from the start of the season and was really beginning to play as a team and beginning to play volleyball.

?We lost the next game 20-25, again key mistakes at the end of the game that crushed our chances of pulling out a win,? he said. ?We couldn?t regroup in the third game and actually missed three serves in a row to allow them an easy finish and match win.

?We need to learn how to finish a match,? he added. ?The girls were heartbroken after losing the first match after playing one of the best games of the season so far.?

On Sept. 11, the Warriors defeated Ellinwood (25-15, 25-19) and lost to Smoky Valley (25-27, 25-27).

?Ellinwood struggled in the match and our team took advantage of that,? Versch said. ?We played smart ball and allowed them to make mistakes.?

The win was Marion?s second of the season.

?We were ahead in the first game against Smoky Valley but just could not put them away,? Versch said. ?Some key mistakes at the end of the first game allowed them to take it away from us.?

Coming?Marion traveled to Hesston on Tuesday for league matches against Hesston and Wichita Collegiate. Marion?s next matches will be at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25, at Sterling.
