MHS goes 0-for-opening set at Sterling

The Marion High School softball squad opened its season with a pair of losses Friday against Sterling, 11-1 and 8-6.

Alex Cain pitched the opener, allowing 11 runs on four hits and three walks with eight errors committed behind her. Cain struck out four.

Shelby Percell slammed a triple, but Cain scored the only Warrior run in the 11-1 loss.

Kristin Waner threw the second game and benefitted from a stronger performance by her teammates. But the game ended in an 8-6 defeat, as four Marion errors proved costly.

Lauren Helmer, Cain, Percell, Waner and Anna Laurin each recorded a single and a run scored. Tacy Taylor and Lana Carroll both doubled and scored a run, and Austin Percell drew three walks and scored once.

The Warriors drew 10 walks in the second game and struck out just four times, compared to striking out five times for only two walks in the opener.

Coming?Marion played at Smoky Valley Tuesday and hosts Hillsboro today. The Warriors travel to Haven April 8.
