The Marion girls defeated Sedgwick, 45-38, Tuesday to conclude the regular season and improve to 15-5 overall. The week prior, Marion defeated Sedgwick, 35-34.
This time, the Warriors trailed 6-0 before scoring nine unanswered points to take the lead. The Cardinals ended the quarter with a string of four to lead, 10-9, at the first break.
Kirsten Hansen and Kourtney Hansen contributed to an 8-2 Warrior run to put Marion in front, 17-12. The teams traded threes after that. Marion?s came from Bailey Robson at the 2:45 mark. The Warriors led, 20-18, at halftime.
Four of Sedgwick?s seven first-half field goals were three-pointers.
The teams battled evenly through the third quarter. Marion held a 31-29 lead by the end of it.
The Warriors outscored Sedgwick, 14-9, in the final period. The teams traded blows until midway through when Kourtney Hansen and Robson scored in succession to give Marion a bit of breathing room, 39-33.
After a Sedgwick three-point play, Kirsten Hansen, Kourtney Hansen and Erika Hess each made two free-throws to boost Marion to a comfortable, 45-36, lead with 30 seconds left. Sedgwick added a pair of charity shots to bring it to the final, seven-point spread.
?Offensively, I just thought we had a better night than we had last Tuesday,? coach Kelly Robson said. ?We were making jump shots. We were getting the ball inside to Kourtney. We were aggressive.?
Kourtney Hansen led all scorers with 16 points.
Coming?Marion is competing in the Class 3A substate hosted by Halstead this week.
Marion (15-5) has received the No. 3 seed and will host No. 6 Eureka (7-13) Tuesday at 7 p.m.
Also on Marion?s side of the bracket is No. 2 Southeast of Saline (15-5), who will host No. 7 Halstead (6-14).
On the other side of the bracket, No. 1 Hesston (16-4) will host No. 8 Hutchinson Trinity (4-15), and No. 4 Remington (13-7) will host No. 5 Sedgwick (9-11).
Semifinal games are scheduled for Friday, and the finals for Saturday, all at Halstead.
