MHS boys, girls in top three

The Marion High School boys track team placed a close second to host Hesston Thursday, and the Warrior girls trailed only Hesston and Garden Plain at the 10-team invitational meet.

?We still have not put it all together as a track team and we look forward to next week at league as the opportunity to do just that,? coach Grant Thierolf said. ?We were led by our javelin throwers this week…a great job of coming back from a lackluster performance at Beloit.?

Mitchell Leppke and Sheldon Boone placed 1-2 in the javelin, with marks of 164 feet, three inches for Leppke and 157-8 for Boone.

Nick Klenda won the discus (156-1) with a throw nearly 20 feet longer than the second place distance.

Other top-3 finishers on the boys side included: Elliot Hett (second, 14.62) in the 110 meter hurdles and Luke Gordon (first, 6-0) in the high jump.

Thierolf highlighted Drew Maddox?s fourth place finish in the long jump (19-5).

?He has placed the last two weeks and is really starting to take to that event,? he said.

On the girls side, Camille Christensen won the 3,200 by more than 23 seconds with a time of 12:59.63.

Kayley Heerey and Kristen Steinborn returned to action and helped boost the 4×100 to a second place finish with a time of 52.63 seconds.

?It was good to get Kayley and Kristen back this week,? Thierolf said. ?Kayley ran very well in the 100 and led off with a fast leg in the 4 x 100 while Kristen is getting better at the javelin throw week by week.?

Heerey placed fourth in the 100 (13.21). Bridget Lundy helped lift Marion to third place in the 4×800 and fourth in the 4×400.

Thierolf also noted ?the toughness of Whitney Gordon.?

?She has a great future in track and field, placing second in the high jump and fourth in the 300 hurdles after falling on the sixth hurdle,? he said.

And then there was Julia Zeiner, who took first in the 300 meter hurdles (47-07), first in the long jump (17-83⁄4), and first in the triple jump (37-73⁄4).

?Her race in the 300 hurdles was the first time she had run that race since state of last year,? Thierolf said. ?She had not even run the full distance once in practice, so her time was pretty astounding.?

Coming?Marion competes at the MCAA league meet to be hosted Friday afternoon at Sterling.
