MHS boys drops two MCAA contests, record falls to 5-9

Marion dropped two games last week, falling at Wichita Collegiate 81-36 on Tuesday and Halstead 44-39 at home Friday night.

Collegiate?Collegiate took control from the opening tip, downing Marion 81-36.

Marion was unable to handle the Collegiate press, turning the ball over 27 times. Putting up only 29 shots in the game, Marion shot 37 percent from the field and was 1-for-8 from behind the arc.

Bryce Cornejo paced the Spartans with 22 points on 8-for-9 shooting. Blake Jablonski scored 12 and Doug Burton finished with 10.

Isaac Hett was the only Warrior in double digits, finishing with 12 points. Jordan Versch added nine and Eric Vogel had seven points and eight rebounds.

Halstead? Halstead and Marion battled until the final minute with Halstead getting the late advantage for a 44-39 win.

Neither team was able to take control of the game. Halstead held the biggest lead at 39-31 late in the ball game.

The game opened with both teams trading baskets. The first quarter ended with a 12-10 lead for Halstead. During the first quarter a Halstead player took a scary fall.

Jared Regehr fell on his back after attempting to retrieve a rebound. He was looked over by the coaching staff and walked off the floor. He finished the ball game.

Halstead opened up a five-point lead right before the half thanks to four straight points scored in between the 2:00 and 1:00 mark. The first half ended with Halstead leading 22-17. The Warriors started the second half on a 5-0 run to tie the game up at 22 with 6:46 to play in the third.

Neither team was able to build any lead until Halstead found themselves up 36-30 with 3:40 left to play. The Dragons extended their lead to the largest of the game at 39-31 with 2:20 left to play.

Marion cut the Halstead lead to 42-39 with 14.6 seconds left to play with drives to the basket and free throws. Mitch Cady scored four points with driving lay ups in the late fourth quarter rally.

Three was the closest Marion would get, as Halstead downed two free throws. Marion attempted a few three-point shots on its final possession but was unable to connect, ending the game.

Halstead was led by Cody Ratcliffe with 20 points and Chris Santonya with 15 points and eight rebounds.

Issac Hett booked a double double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Eric Vogel fouled out with 13 points, five rebounds and three steals. Other scorers for Marion were Wil Case (6), Mitch Cady (4), Jordan Versch (2).

Marion drops to to 2-4 in the MCAA and 5-9 overall.

Coming? Marion travels to Sterling on Tuesday.
