MHS 10th vs Sterling, Smoky

The Marion High School volleyball team defeated Sterling (25-13, 25-20) and Smoky Valley (28-26, 18-25, 25-11) to improve its season mark to 10-13 on Sept. 30.

The Warriors were led by Julia Zeiner, who recorded six of the Warriors 17 kills against Sterling. Lindsay Hett had four.

Chassidy Carlson had 10 assists and 3 aces, and Kayley Heerey led the team in attack percentage, converting two of three chances into Warrior scores.

Smoky Valley had few answers for the Marion attack in the first and third games, and the Warriors scored 14 of 28 first-game points via kill, with only two attack errors.

But the error tally rose to seven during the middle game, and the Warriors mustered only six kills.

Marion found its balance for the third game, hammering out six kills against two errors as the Vikings waned.

Zeiner again led the attack, averaging 3.3 per game. Kayley Heerey saw her attack totals rise, and she finished seven of 13 tries with two errors in three games. Lindsay Hett and Kristen Steinborn each had four kills. Whitney Gordon had three solo blocks.

Coming?Marion (10-13) visited Collegiate Oct. 7, and next plays at Halstead. The JV squad hosts its home tournament Saturday.
