Marion wrestlers second in opener

The Marion wrestling team kicked off its season with a second-place finish at the Burlington Wildcat Duals Friday.

The Warriors went 4-1 on the day, defeating Central Heights (60-12), Garden Plain (59-9), Eureka (50-28) and Royal Valley (46-25) before losing to the host team in the finals (45-27).

?We wrestled Burlington well, too,??coach Chad Adkins said. ?We just don?t match up with them very well. Some of our better kids are against their best kids who are just better than we are right now.?

Three Warriors were a perfect 5-0 on the day:?Ezra Darnall at 132 pounds, Remington Putter (160 pounds) and Tyler Palic (195). Palic needed just 7 minutes, 28 seconds to pin all five wrestlers he faced and won the award for pinning all of his opponents in the shortest time.

Six Warriors went 4-1 on the day, including Jarrett Johnson (126), Bryce Shults (138), Noah Albin (145), Charlie Nordquist (182), Ryan Cochran (220) and Adam Kjellin (285).

Ethan Darnall (120) and Jared Rahe (152) each went 2-3, while Kolton Brewer went 1-4 (170).

Adkins said he was pleased with the way the Warriors competed in their season-opener.

?I was definitely pleasantly surprised,??he said. ?They always wrestle hard and tough and things like that, but we?re ahead of the game right now, and that?s a good place to be, as far as technique-wise. We looked good.?

Coming?Marion will wrestle at Hesston Saturday. Matches begin at 9 a.m.
