The Marion wrestling team finished fifth among a field of 11 at Hoisington’s Cardinal Classic Friday with a team score of 85 1⁄2 points behind Marysville 211 1⁄2, Hoisington 170, Douglass 117 1⁄2 and Riley County 93 1⁄2.
Bryce Shults (25-4) paved the way by winning the 138-pound weight class with a 4-0 record. Following a first-round bye, Shults won two matches by fall: over Cimarron’s Dylan Hibbs and Hillsboro’s Kaden Ward. He then won his next two matches by technical fall: over Goddard Eisenhower’s Dayne Holmgren, 18-1, and Douglass’ Conner Porter, 19-3, in the finals.
“Bryce had another great weekend with a first-place finish,” coach Tyler McMichael said. “Bryce wrestled really well all night and continues to get better every week.”
Two Warriors placed second with 4-1 records: Jarrett Johnson (132 pounds) and Tyler Palic (195).
Johnson (26-5) pinned his first three opponents: Cimarron’s Anthony Santisteven, Marysville’s Brycen Detimore, and Riley County’s Keaton Koening. Johnson defeated Ellsworth’s David Koralek III by 8-1 decision in the semifinals, then lost to Hoisington’s Tanner Cassity by fall in the finals.
“Jarrett wrestled very well,” McMichael said. “(He) just (came) up short in his finals match.”
Palic (24-5) also pinned his first three opponents: Stafford’s Salem Lowe, Wichita County-Leoti’s Javier Hernandez, and Goddard Eisenhower’s LJ Flax. In his third meeting with Douglass’ Seth Fouts, Palic won by 6-1 decision. Palic lost a 3-2 decision to Marysville’s Nick Ackerman in the finals.
“When it came to the finals, Tyler still had a good match—his opponent from Marysville was just able to squeeze in two points in the last 15 seconds,” McMichael said. “It was a great matchup, and I am excited to see those two wrestlers go at it again.”
Ethan Darnall (15-15) went 3-2 at 120 pounds to place third. He pinned his first two opponents: Hoisington’s Dylan Carrier and Cimarron’s Alex McPhail. Darnall lost to Goddard Eisenhower’s Seth Doud by major decision, 11-3, then lost to Marysville’s Jonny Crome by major decision, 9-0. In the third-place match, Darnall pinned Riley County’s Ryan Lindell.
“(Ethan) almost had the wrestler who won his bracket (Doud) pinned but just couldn’t get it done in time,” McMichael said. “Ethan has been making leaps and bounds since Christmas break, and I am excited to see how that continues to go.”
Charlie Nordquist (16-8) went 2-3 at 182 pounds to place fourth. He faced two ranked opponents. Jarrett McLinden (17-12) finished fifth at 285 pounds with a 3-2 record. Brock Mitchell (7-17) finished seventh at 145 pounds with a 2-3 record. Kolton Brewer (8-14) placed eighth at 160 pounds with a 1-4 record.
