Marion wrestlers earn second place at Hesston Invitational

The Marion wrestling team came home with a second-place finish at the Hesston Invitational Saturday.

?We are wrestling really well right now, especially for this early in the season,? said coach Chad Atkins. ?We have a lot of work to do to be where we want to be in February, but it is very promising to be wrestling this well right now, knowing that we can be a lot better.?

Five Warriors competed in the finals, with nine out of 10 competitors placing at the large meet.

?Our five wrestlers that were in the finals wrestled well and learned some things that we need to do better,? Atkins said.

?All of our guys in the finals Saturday have started to buy into the system and are reaping the benefits of being patient and aggressive.?

Brody Carroll and Evan Slater each earned first-place finishes for the Warriors in the 138 and 220-pound weight classes.

?Brody wrestles really smart,? Atkins said. ?We have been working on him, opening up with his offense. He was aggressive and smart.

?Evan wrestled the best tournament I have seen him wrestle,? Atkins added. ?Evan has started to believe in his ability and has become a multi-dimensional wrestler, which we have been working really hard at.?

Cole Lewman and Colten Johnson each placed second in the 152 and 160-pound weight classes. Kyle Palic also nabbed third at 170.

Eric Regnier finished third in the 120-pound weight class and Zac Lewman placed third in the 182-pound weight class.

Beretta Janzen and Brayden Putter each finished fourth in the 106 and 132-pound weight classes.
