Marion wrestlers compete at Cottonwood Falls tourney

Three Marion wrestlers competed at the Chase County Invitational Saturday in Cottonwood Falls.

Todd Palic, who ranks fifth in Class 3-2-1A, paved the way with a second-place finish at 182 pounds. Following a first-round bye, Palic pinned Eli King of Oskaloosa, then lost by major decision, 9-1, to Chase County’s Chase Owen in the first-place match.

Two Warriors finished fourth in their respective weight classes, each receiving one bye.

Forest Slater went 1-2 at 106 pounds, earning a consolation semifinal win by fall over Herington’s Ridley Swader.

Luke Lanning went 1-2 at 195 pounds, winning by fall over Onaga’s Kameron Henneberg in the consolation semifinals.

“We had (a) good showing at Chase County on Saturday,” coach Tyler McMichael said. “I am most pleased with Luke Lanning. He has made tremendous strides in his work ethic and skill in the sport. I am very excited to see what he can do next weekend at regionals.”

Coming—Marion will wrestle at the Class 3-2-1A regional tournament hosted by Fredonia Friday and Saturday.

Teams in the field in addition to Marion and the host school are: Anthony/Harper-Chaparral, Burden-Central, Canton-Galva, Cheney, Cherokee-Southeast, Cherryvale, Douglass, Erie, Eureka, Garden Plain, Halstead, Hillsboro, Howard-West Elk, Humboldt, Kingman, Leon-Bluestem, Mound City-Jayhawk Linn, Rosalia-Flinthills, Uniontown and Remington.

“We had some sickness hit our team later in the week last week,” McMichael said. “I am expecting us to have five for regionals and do our best to get everyone out of there. I expect everyone to give their best and try to qualify for state.”
