The Marion volleyball team is off to an 0-5 start through the first week of the season.
The Warriors dropped matches with Hoisington and Smoky Valley last Tuesday at the Lindsborg triangular, then were swept by Hillsboro, South?east of Saline and Moundridge Thurs?day at the Moundridge quadrangular.
?Overall, I was a bit disappointed in the lack of stepping up for the challenge,? coach Jim Versch said about the Lindsborg matches. ?We have many areas to improve in.?
At Lindsborg, senior Whitney Gordon posted seven kills in the Warriors 21-25, 20-25 loss to Smoky Valley.
?We were ahead at times in both games but couldn?t finish,? Versch said. ?We made some poor decisions as far as not getting the ball to the strong hitters.
?In both matches, our serve receive was far below good, which didn?t allow us to be very aggressive on offense.?
In the 17-25, 16-25 loss to Hoisington, Gordon recorded seven kills for Marion, with her teammates contributing eight.
?Our youth and lack of varsity experience showed,? Versch said. ?I was very happy with the setting of Katey Ehrlich and the hitting of Whitney Gordon.
?I don?t think we were very well prepared for this first game.?
Versch declined to comment on Thursday?s matches. The Warriors lost 10-25, 17-25 to Hills?boro, 20-25, 18-25 to Southeast of Saline and 14-25, 18-25 to Mound?ridge.
Coming? The Warriors were scheduled to play Tuesday at Berean Academy, then will compete Saturday at the Centre Invitational. Pool play begins for Marion at 10 a.m.
