Marion went 2-1 in pool play, earning victories over Lyons (22-25, 25-20, 25-15) and the Wichita Defenders (25-13, 26-24) before losing to eventual tournament champion Douglass (25-10, 25-15).

“After the first set against Lyons, we played well in our pool play,” coach Kris Burkholder said. “We got off to a slow start against Lyons, but once we settled down, we were able to play our game.”

As the runners up in Pool A, Marion faced Halstead, the winner of Pool B, in the semifinals and lost, 25-9, 25-6. Halstead finished second in the tournament.

The Warriors played Eureka in the third-place match and lost in two sets, 25-22, 25-23.

“Douglass and Halstead (are) both very good teams, and we did not play with confidence against these two teams and it showed,” Burkholder said. “We came back and played with more confidence and were aggressive against Eureka, but we fell short.”

Burkholder praised her team for finishing the day on a more positive note.

“I was super proud of how we came back and played Eureka after losing to Douglass and Halstead,” she said. “Our team did a good job of gaining our composure and fighting back.”
