Marion struggles at home

The Marion volleyball team stayed home last week, hosting the Marion Triangular Tuesday and the Marion Spikefest Saturday.

Marion defeated Heart of America opponents Bennington, 25-19, 25-17, and Moundridge, 21-25, 25-19, 25-14, Tuesday in the USD?408 gym.

Junior Whitney Gordon finished with 23 kills. Sophomore Briana Hall had nine.

Senior Chassidy Carlson set up the front row with 21 set assists and was solid defensively with nine digs. Freshman Katey Ehrlich had 17 set assists and nine digs. Senior Raelene Allen had 10 digs.

The Warriors returned to the gym Saturday for the Marion Spikefest. Marion finished the day 1-2 and missed the four-team championship bracket.

Wichita Collegiate won the tournament, defeating Sedgwick in two sets in the championship match. Eureka took third and Halstead fourth.

In pool play, Marion fell to Hals?tead, 11-25, 16-25, Sedgwick, 20-25, 13-25, and beat Centre, 25-13, 25,20.

?It was a poor performance,? coach Jim Versch said. ?We really lost our focus.?

Gordon finished the day with 14 kills. Carlson had 20 set assists.

Coming?Marion (10-7) was scheduled to play Tuesday at Inman.
