Marion splits two games at Berean

The Marion volleyball team split two games at Berean Academy Tuesday.

Marion opened with a three-set loss to Ell-Saline, ranked fourth in Class 2A.

The Warriors showed a slow start out of the gate, falling behind 9-0 in Set 1.

?We have got to do a better job of serve-receive,? coach Deanna Thierolf said. ?We know what we have to do, we just have to do it.?

Although Marion fought back, Ell-Saline won, 25-20.

In Set 2, Marion again fell behind early, 10-2, but a Kelli Hess kill after a long volley brought Marion within 20-16 and ignited an 8-0 Warrior run for a 24-20 Marion lead.

The Warriors went on to win, 25-22, to take the game to three sets.

?I was pleased with the way we came back the second (set),? Thierolf said. ?When we have a pass, we can get the set, we can get the hit.?

Ell-Saline jumped to an 8-1 lead in the third set behind the hitting of the Cardinals? Aubrey Wilson, and Marion never led.

Three ace serves from Julia Hall and a Kaelyn Thierolf kill brought Marion within 22-18, but Ell-Saline went on to win, 25-19.

?I was proud of (our) fight,? Thierolf said. ?And I tell you, their Wilson, she?s a stud.?

Marion followed with a two-set victory over host Berean.

In Set 1, Marion claimed a 4-1 lead early and extended the margin to 21-11 after a Katey Ehrlich service ace.

Marion won, 25-16.

The score remained closer in Set 2, but Marion eventually gained distance for a 23-16 lead.

Berean rallied to tie the game, 24-24, but Marion held on for the 30-28 win.

?You just can?t ever play flat, especially (against) a home team, as you saw (Berean) come back,? Thierolf said. ?We just played very flat the second match.?

Coming?Marion was scheduled to play at Peabody Tuesday and will participate in the Heart of America league tournament Saturday at Ell-Saline. Matches begin at 9 a.m.
