Marion softball gets sweep in first league action of year

The Marion softball team swept Inman in its first Heart of America league doubleheader Friday.

Marion won Game 1, 16-3 in six innings, recording 20 hits.

Inman took a 3-0 lead after two innings, but Marion blew the game open with a 10-run top of the third inning and never looked back. The Warriors scored two runs in the fifth inning, then solidified the run-rule win with a four-run top of the sixth inning.

Marion won Game 2, 29-10 in five innings.

The Warriors scored in every evening, none bigger than their 12-run top of the second inning that extended what had been a 6-4 Marion lead after the first inning. Marion led, 18-7, after two innings, then scratched across two more runs in the third inning to make it 20-7. The Warriors scored one run to Inman’s three in the fourth inning, then sealed the run-rule win with an eight-run top of the fifth inning.

Marion recorded 27 hits.

“Another week of practice helped a lot,” coach Judy Noller said. “We tried to get more work on batting last week. … The girls really hit the ball solid. Even when we made an out it was hit hard. I think everyone who played got a hit and an RBI. Hopefully we will continue to hit the ball well this week.”

Coming—Marion (2-0, 2-2) was scheduled to host Canton-Galva Tuesday and will host Moundridge Friday in a league doubleheader rescheduled from March 29.
