Marion goes 0-5 in HOA tournament

The Marion volleyball team recorded one win and six losses over the course of a week that culminated in the Heart of America league tournament Saturday.

Ell-Saline?Marion went 0-5 in the Heart of America league volleyball tournament Saturday hosted by Ell-Saline.

?We played some really close matches but came up short at league,??coach Deanna Thierolf said. ?We lost all five matches, but the girls gave it (their) all.?

Marion began the day with a three-set loss to Moundridge. The Wildcats won the first set, 25-21, but Marion rallied in Set 2.

The Warriors claimed a 5-2 lead after back-to-back kills by Katey Ehrlich and Kelli Hess and enjoyed a 19-13 advantage after Kaelyn Thierolf recorded a kill.

Marion won, 25-19.

Set 3 was a back-and-forth battle, and Marion held a 15-12 lead after a Thierolf kill. But Moundridge used a 5-0 run to take a 17-15 lead and went on to win, 25-19.

Marion then faced Remington for the second time last week and lost, 25-22, 25-22.

The Warriors struggled against Sedgwick, playing a ?poor match,? Thierolf said. Sedgwick won in two, 25-9, 25-22.

In the fourth game, Marion fell to Hutchinson Trinity, 25-15, 25-21.

Marion faced Ell-Saline in the final match of the day.

The Warriors claimed a first-set victory, 26-24, but lost the next two sets, 25-23, 25-14.

?We played well for 10 out of the 12 sets,? Thierolf said. ?We just struggled to get a few more points on Ell-Saline, Moundridge and Remington. All close games, but we just couldn?t claim the W.

?Our girls play hard, scrappy ball; we just aren?t very tall, but they continue to play hard all the time. I am really proud of them.?

Peabody-Burns?Marion split two games at Peabody Tuesday. Marion opened with a 25-20, 25-19 win over Peabody-Burns, but fell to Remington, 25-21, 25-18.

Coming?Marion will host a Class 3-A sub-state Saturday that also includes Council Grove, Southeast of Saline, Halstead, Hesston, Lyons, Sedgwick and Wabaunsee.
