Marion girls dominate Lyons, 50-21, to improve record to 5-1 for the year

Opening the game on a 27-3 run over the first quarter-and-a-half, the Marion Warriors girl?s basketball team dominated during Lyons? homecoming Friday night, beating Lyons 50-21.

Warriors Lindsay Hett and Kayley Heerey knocked down two three pointers to begin the contest as Marion rattled off 12 straight points before Lyons got on the scoreboard with a Bailey Ashton free throw.

Marion continued its offensive production and solid defensive play, not allowing a Lyons field goal until less than two minutes remained in the quarter. The Warriors ended the first quarter with a 20-3 lead.

Starting off the second quarter scoring, Marion?s Whitney Gordon converted on a traditional three point play. Gordon scored on a lay up near the basket while absorbing contact from the Lyons? defender. She followed the tough play by knocking down the charity attempt to extend the Warrior lead to 23-3.

The Warriors scored four more unanswered points before the Lions ended the half on an 8-0 run. Marion coach Randy Savage was disappointed with the way the half ended.

?We?re seniors,? he said. ?We should be expected to play better than that.?

Marion outscored Lyons 23-10 in the second half, holding the Lions to 2-for-16 shooting from the field. Lyons shot 17.9 percent in the contest. Marion went 20-for-47 from the field in the contest, including 5-for-12 from three.

Marion?s Julia Zeiner ended the contest with a double-double, scoring a game high 21 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Heerey finished the game with 11 points and shot 60 percent from beyond the arc on 3-for-5 shooting. Hett was 2-for-3 from three, scoring nine points.

Other scorers for the Warriors were Gordon (5) and Kristen Steinborn and Chassidy Carlson (2).

The Lions were led by Michelle Burrola, who finished with nine points.

Marion improves to 5-1 overall and is 1-0 in MCAA league play. The Warriors were in action Tuesday at Haven and host Hoisington Friday. Game time is 6 p.m.
