Marion edges Centre for title

The Marion volleyball team won the tournament championship at the Centre Invitational Saturday.

Combined with a 21-25, 20-25 loss at Canton-Galva last Tuesday, the Warrior record is 6-2.

Centre?The Warriors swept all five matches at the Centre Invitational, including a victory over the home team in the title match.

?We played really well as a team all day,? coach Deanna Thierolf said. ?The girls played with a lot of intensity and emotion. It was just fun to sit back and watch them have fun.?

The day began with a 25-12, 25-16 win over Rural Vista. Marion followed with a 25-5, 25-10 victory over Northfield, with all of Northfield?s points in the first set coming on Marion errors.

The Warriors? final game in pool play pitted them against Centre. Marion led the majority of the first set, but Centre drew within one, 24-23. The Warriors held on to win, 25-23, and followed that with a 25-14 victory in Set 2.

With the win, Marion advanced to the semifinal round, where they defeated Herington, 25-21, 25-15, and a berth in the finals.

The Warriors came out strong to defeat Centre a second time, 25-13, 25-13, to win the tournament.

Katey Ehrlich and Kir?sten Hansen were both named to the all-tournament team.

Coming?The Warriors were scheduled to play at Hutch Trinity Tuesday and will host the Marion Spike?fest Saturday. Matches begin at 9 a.m.
