Marion drops first series

The Marion softball team opened the 2019 season with a pair of non-league losses at Council Grove Tuesday.

Marion lost Game 1, 10-0, in five innings. The Braves scored in every inning, scratching across six runs in the first inning, one run in the second, two runs in the third and one run in the fourth to claim the run-rule victory.

Jayden May recorded Marion’s only hits of the game, going 2-for-2 at-bat.

Grace Overton (0-1) absorbed the pitching loss. In four innings, she surrendered 10 hits and 10 runs (seven earned). She walked one batter and struck out one.

Marion lost Game 2, 13-3, in six innings. Council Grove again took an early lead, plating four runs in the opening inning. Marion scored two runs in the third inning to trim the Braves’ lead in half, but Council Grove responded by scoring one run in the fourth inning to make it 5-2. After Marion added one run in the fifth inning, Council Grove plated five runs in the bottom half of the inning, and the Braves solidified the run-rule win with a three-run sixth inning.

Marion recorded 10 hits. Tori Shults was 3-for-3 at-bat, including one double. She had one RBI. Chisholm Waner was 2-for-3, including a home run and a double. She also had one RBI. Jayden May was 2-for-4.

Waner (0-1) sustained the pitching loss. In 5 1/3 innings, she surrendered 10 hits and 13 runs (seven earned). She walked six batters and struck out one.

“I like the improvements we made with our batting from Game 1 to Game 2,” coach Judy Noller said. “We only had two hits Game 1 but then had 10 hits Game 2. Now we need to work on getting those timely hits so we don’t leave those runners stranded on base.

“On defense, we had too many fielding errors but no throwing errors. With more work on the field, those fielding errors will decrease. I see a lot of positives and potential moving forward this season.”

Coming—Marion (0-2) will open league play Friday at Inman. The Warriors’ doubleheader with Moundridge scheduled for March 29 was postponed to April 12 because of weather.
