Marion Cross Country earns one medal at meet

The Marion cross country team earned one medal at Halstead Thursday in what Warrior coach Grant Thierolf said was the most challenging meet of the season so far. Races took place at the Wedgewood Country Club.

“This was by far the toughest meet we have been to this year, and I thought the athletes competed hard,” Thierolf said. “It was a great day to run, although the course did not run as fast as we thought it would.”

In the girls’ race, Heidi Grimmett covered the 5-k course in 21 minutes, 33.8 seconds, good for the seventh-place medal among a field of 83 runners.

“Heidi ran a very strong race,” Thierolf said. “She moved up from 12th place halfway through the race and competed hard to the end.”

Bethany Grimmett was 81st (31:02.9).

“Bethany ran a solid race and competed down the stretch,” Thierolf said. “She had a great week of practice and will end the season well.”

Meanwhile, Colton Boudreaux was 57th in the boys’ race with a time of 20:19.8, about 18 seconds from his personal best.

“Colton had a very good time but was caught in a race with some very good runners and some runners who were fighting for team positions,” Thierolf said. “His time will come down as we head into our last couple of meets.”

Braxton Schuh was 85th (23:42.9), 24 seconds from his personal best.

“Braxton got his time back in the 23-minute range, which was a nice improvement from the past couple of meets,” Thierolf said.

Coming—Marion was scheduled to compete at the Eureka Invitational Tuesday. The Heart of America league meet will be hosted by Berean Academy Oct. 11.
