Marion competes in tough league meet

The Marion cross country team competed in the Heart of America league meet hosted by Berean Academy at Harvey County East Lake Thursday.

“We actually had a pretty good day at the HOA league meet,” coach Grant Thierolf said. “It is a very tough meet that has a number of runners in it that will bring home medals at the state meet in a couple of weeks.”

Heidi Grimmett paced the team, earning the seventh-place medal in a personal-best time of 21 minutes, 11.2 seconds, trimming more than four seconds from her previous best.

“Congratulations goes to Heidi for placing seventh, running a PR, and being named first team all league,” Thierolf said. “She has run very well this season and looks to have a great next couple of weeks.”

Bethany Grimmett was 45th in 29:11.1.

“Bethany ran a very competitive race, just missing a PR and is looking good for this weekend,” Thierolf said.

Meanwhile, in the boys’ race, Colton Boudreaux finished 49th in 22:27.0.

“Colton has been slowed by an illness but ran a very gutsy race,” Thierolf said. “He will rebound this week and run a great race at regionals.”

Braxton Schuh was 50th in a personal-best 22:31.0. He trimmed about 48 seconds from his previous best.

“Braxton ran his best race of the season,” Thierolf said. “It has been fun to watch him improve this season.”

Coming—Marion will compete in the Class 2A regional meet hosted by Burlington Saturday. The girls’ race is scheduled for 11:20 a.m. The boys’ race is set for noon.

In addition to the Warriors, the field includes Arma-Northeast, Cherokee-Southeast, Hillsboro, Howard-West Elk, Humboldt, Leon-Bluestem, Mound City-Jayhawk Linn, Oswego, Pittsburg-St. Mary’s Colgan, Pleasanton, Richmond-Central Heights, Uniontown, Remington, Wichita Independent and Yates Center.

The top three teams and the top 10 runners, with possible additional individual qualifiers, will advance to state.
