Marion boys drop games to Hutch Trinity and Sedgwick

A third-quarter surge by Hutch Trinity was enough for the Celtics to get past the Marion boys, 52-40, Friday in Marion.

?We do that to ourselves,? coach Jeff McMillin said. ?We play three good quarters, and then….?

The Warriors started strong, replying to the Celtics point-for-point and hitting their free throws. But the Celtics took advantage of the Warriors? turnovers. They scored two layups off steals in the last five minutes of the first quarter for an 8-4 lead.

?Their man offense was real potent,? McMillin said. ?They try to wear you down the whole game and get the turn?overs.?

With 30 seconds left in the period, Marion?s Jordan Hett drove for a layup to narrow the Celtics? lead to 11-10 at the break.

In the second period, the lead changed twice and neither team lead by more than three.

A nice pass set up the Warriors? Colin Eurit for an easy basket with 10 seconds left in the half, but a buzzer shot from the Celtics? gave them a 20-18 lead at intermission.

The Celtics came out strong in the second half, extending their lead to 10 points with 4:37 left in the third period.

A three-pointer by Marion?s Dillon Richmond pared a 13-point lead to 10, 38-28, with 5:50 left in the game, but another Celtics? three-pointer a couple of minutes later firmly reestablished their lead, 45-29.

?We played hard against them,? McMillin said. ?I think in the last couple games we?ve made strides.?

The Warriors had two players in double digits, Richmond with 12 and Hett with 10. Derek Racette racked up 25 points for the Celtics.

Sedgwick?A 10-0 start wasn?t enough for Marion to hold off a second-half Sedgwick surge Tuesday, as the Warriors came up short on the road, 51-42.

Jordan Hett began Marion?s early run with a layup and a free throw, giving the Warriors a 3-0 lead. Jordan Versch chipped in two free throws and a 3-pointer, and Jacob Harper scored five points in the quarter.

The two teams were evenly matched in the second quarter, with Marion taking a nine-point advantage going into halftime, 29-20.

?We?ve had a lot of emphasis on offense in practice, and tonight we came out with composure,? coach Jeff McMillin said.

The second half was a thrilling, but different, story for Marion. With 4:12 remaining in the third quarter, Hett hit a jumper to put the Warriors up by 11 and cause a frustrated Sedgwick coach to call time out.

After the pause, the Cardinals tightened their full-court pressure and caused back-to-back turnovers, scoring six unanswered points in the process.

With the momentum shifted, and the home crowd roaring, Sedgwick held the Warriors to four points in the third quarter, and tied the game at 33.

Things quickly spiraled out-of-control in the fourth quarter. Sedgwick went on a 6-0 run, and the press continued to cause problems for Marion.

?We tried to stay composed against the pressure and we didn?t do that very well. They were trying to speed us up and we let them,? McMillin said.

Versch finished the game with 15 points and Hett had 14. The Warriors (0-3, 1-7) will host Hutch Trinity Friday.

Coming?Marion will compete at the Centre Invitational tournament this week.
