All 11 Marion wrestlers placed among the top six at the Halstead Invitational Wrestling Tournament Jan. 11-12 to boost the Warriors to a second-place team finish among 21 schools with 149 points.
Smoky Valley topped all teams with 206 points, while Cherryvale came in third behind Marion with 136.5.
Leading the way for Marion was Brody Carroll, who finished second in the 152-pound weight class, and Evan Slater, who was second at 220 pounds.
“Brody and Evan both wrestled well, and we learned some things that we need to change technique-wise to win those matches at the state tournament,” coach Chad Adkins said.
Beretta Janzen placed third at 113 pounds.
“Beretta wrestled very well,” Adkins said. “He did things that we work on and wrestled within himself.”
Adam Janzen finished in fourth place at 182 pounds.
Five Warriors earned fifth-place finishes: Remington Putter (120 pounds), Brayden Putter (138), Luke Steele (145), Derrick Dvorak (160) and John Nordquist (195).
Rounding out the Warrior lineup with sixth-place finishes were Eric Regnier (126 pounds) and Zac Lewman (170 pounds).
“We are going to keep working hard to get better, and the guys will be where they need to be at the end of the year,” Adkins said.
