Leihy, Funk 13th at Hesston tourney

The Hillsboro doubles team of Mary Leihy and Hannah Funk were the only entries to come away with match victories at the always tough Hesston invitational Saturday.

The two-some, playing together for the first time, lost their first two matches but came back to earn 13th place in the 16-team doubles bracket with an 8-2 win against Central Plains and 8-6 over DeSoto.

?Mary seems to be the ingredient that helps doubles pairs win this year,? coach Bob Woelk said.

The doubles team of Sonja Jost and Shelby John?son finished 0-4.

With Allison Gray not competing, Elli Weisbeck and Anna Glanzer played singles for the first time this season. Both finished with 0-3 records on the court, but both earned a bye win in the consolation brackets.

?Yes, it was a tough field, with several state qualifiers and the state champion in the mix,? Woelk said. ?But we had opportunities to win at least one.?

Smoky Valley? The Tro?jans managed two team points to place eighth Thurs?day at the eight-team Smoky Valley Classic in Lindsborg.

A single-bracket format was in play for both singles and doubles.

In singles, Allison Gray (1-2) scored one point for Hills?boro. She lost 4-8 in the first round to Kira Haxton of Smoky Valley, then defeated Kati Fehlman of Chap?man, 8-6, before losing to Jessie Graves of Ellinwood, 3-8.

Sonya Jost (0-2) lost to Kaylyn Oberlee of Central Plains and to Graves, both by 0-8 scores.

In doubles, Mary Leihy and Anna Glanzer (2-2) scored the other point for Hillsboro.

They lost 1-8 to both Soukup and Klaassen of Smoky Valley and Loy and Duer of Chapman, before defeating Bredemeier and Wag?goner of Trinity Catho?lic, 8-1, and Beran and Men?ges of Central Plains, 8-3.

Hannah Funk and Elli Weisbeck (1-2) lost to No. 2 Schrock and Decker of Hesston, 1-8, then defeated Lamb and Talbott of Ellin?wood, 8-4, before losing to Russell and Miller of Hess?ton, 5-8.
