The Marion High School team placed fourth at Friday?s Marion County golf tournament, posting a 650 team score over the course of the 36-hole event.
Luke Gordon totaled a team-best 151 for the day, placing seventh in a field of 90 individuals and 15 teams. The Warriors four-man total was scored by Gordon, Niklas Bronnert (164), Landon Leiker (166) and Lindsay Hett (170).
Hillsboro?s Daniel Kunantaev placed third individually with a score of 147, trailing only Sterling?s Michael Gellerman (136) and Concordia?s Lex Deal (145).
Gellerman posted the best individual score at both Marion Country Club (69) and Hillsboro Municipal Golf Course (67).
Hillsboro finished eighth in the tournament with an overall score of 661. The Trojans? four-man team score of 335 was assembled by Kunantaev, Jacob Kenney (170), Devin Dick (171) and Jared King (182).
Predictably, the Marion and Hillsboro teams both played their own course a little better than they played each other?s.
The Trojans placed fourth on the Hillsboro 18, with Kunantaev?s second place 70 lifting the four-man total to 326.
The Warriors tied for second on the Marion 18, with Gordon?s fifth-place 75 and Leiker?s eighth place 76 both breaking into the top 10.
Only three of the top-10 teams posted a lower score at Hillsboro than in Marion: first place Cheney (627), fifth place Collegiate (652), and Hillsboro.
Goessel?s Tyler Schmidt posted a 156 and came withing a tiebreaker of a top-10 finish for the day. The Bluebirds placed 11th with a 36-hole team score of 706.
Led by Adam Matz, who shot 163 for the day, Centre posted a team score of 676?good for ninth place in the team scoring.
Marion Invitational?Luke Gordon took individual first place with a round of 76 at the Marion Invitational May 5.
Goessel?s Tyler Schmidt placed third (82), and Marion?s Nick Bronnert (83) and Landon Leiker (83) rounded out the top five.
But led by four golfers in the top 11, Centre High School took the six-man title with a score of 518. Heath Hill (83), Adam Matz (83), Jacob Jennings (84) and Tyler Klenda (92) powered the Cougars to second place in the four-man competition.
Marion took second in the six-man race with a round of 525. The Warriors took first in the four-man competition (335) behind Gordon, Bronnert, Leiker and Lindsay Hett (93).
Peabody-Burns placed fourth in the four-man chase with a round of combined round of 376 by Joseph Zappone (87), Brian Wingert (87), Trevor Foth (101) and Jason Wingert (101).
Goessel took second in the two-man scoring behind Schmidt and Hayden Goertzen (89) placed second second in the two-man hunt with a combined score of 171.
Coming?Monday?s MCAA league championship was not concluded before the Free Press print deadline. These results will be posted to the Free Press Web site as soon as they are received.
Regionals will be played May 18 at a site to be determined.
