The Marion High School boys? and girls? cross country teams placed third and fourth, respectively, at the Abilene Invitational Thurs?day.
The girls were led by freshman Monica Spacheck while the boys were led by Ryan Jones and Jordan Hett. Spachek?s time of 17:06 was good for fifth place overall.
?She ran an excellent race,? coach Bethany Carlson said. ?Her competitive side came out.?
She was followed by medalists Jaclyn DeForest (11th, 17:45) and Elizabeth Goentzel (17th, 18:24). Whitney Christensen (37th, 20:40), Jessie Taylor (39th, 20:51) and Cassandra McPhail (44th, 21:22) rounded out the varsity females.
?Unfortunately, three of our girls could not run due to injury,? Carlson said. ?We thought Danae (Edwards) would be back at full strength this year, but her knee soreness came back, and despite Taylor Harms? hard work in the pool and on the track, her ankle injury flared up.?
On the boys? side, Jones placed second with a time of 18 minutes, 40 seconds. Hett placed fourth in 19:13, and was closely followed by Louis Holt (eighth, 19:36).
Four other Warriors received top-30 medals: Patrick McCarty (24th, 21:24), Brandon Meierhoff (27th, 21:47), Michael Kirkpatrick (28th, 21:55) and Jacob Cope (30th, 22:00).
The Warriors? next meet is at Hesston Thursday.
