Jonathan Hinerman placed 16th among 76 varsity boys to lead the Hillsboro cross-country team Thurs?day at Sterling.
The Trojan junior finished the 5-kilometer course in 18 minutes, 43 seconds, which was about 1:35 behind the race winner, Luke Skin?ner of Montezuma.
?It was good to have Jona?than medal again in the varsity boys race and he especially finished well with a good last 200 meters,? coach Stuart Holmes said.
The two girls on the team, Abby Driggers and Lydia Kliewer, finished one-two in the junior varsity girls? race that drew nine runners. Driggers? winning time was 24:36 on the 5-k course while Kliewer finished in 25:33.
In the boys? JV race, Caleb Rempel led Hillsboro by placing 11th in a field of 35 runners with a time of 22:19. He was followed by teammates Tristan Donald?son (14th, 22:55), Tucker Moss (18th, 23:16), Avery Unruh (27th, 24:38) and Samuel Damon (28th, 24:43).
In the seventh-grade one-mile race, Hillsboro?s Caleb Diener set a new school record with a winning time of 5:40. The previous record was 5:58 set by Michael Higby.
Coming?The Trojans will compete at the Central Kansas League meet Thursday in Lyons, which will be the final competition before the Class 2A regional race Oct. 24 hosted by Republic County at the Belleville Country Club.
?As we move into the championship phase of our season with league, regionals and hopefully state the next three weeks, running all aspects of the race well will be needed,? coach Stuart Holmes said.
?Certainly, finishing strong is an important aspect?just like getting out in good position at the start and maintaining a good cadence throughout the race are.?
