Grant Shewey earned a berth in the Class 3-2-1A state tennis tournament by placing sixth Friday at the regional tournament hosted by Wichita Collegiate.
Needing to place among the top six to play at the next level, the Trojan junior defeated Wesley Wescoat of Chaparral 6-1, 6-0, lost to Travis Osland of Collegi?ate 6-3, 6-3 in the quarterfinals, then clinched a trip to state by defeating teammate Jarod Hamm, 6-1, 6-3 to qualify for the fifth-place match. There, Shewey defeated Eric Banning of Hutchinson Trinity, 6-1, 6-0.
Hamm finished his HHS career with a 1-2 day. He defeated Dan Engro of Douglass 6-0, 6-2 in the first round, then lost to Jake Norman of Wichita Independent in the quarterfinals, 6-0, 6-0, before squaring off with Shewey.
In doubles, Harry Faber and Daniel Gray ended their season with a 6-0, 6-3 loss to Anderson and King of Independent.
Diego Castillo and Jeff Pritchard, paired together for the first time this season because Tyler Funk was at a family funeral, lost to Anderson and King 6-0, 6-0.
Independent and Collegiate dominated the regional, scoring 22 and 21 points, respectively, with Hutch?in?son Trinity a distant third with seven points. Hillsboro tied for fourth with four points.
?I think Jarod Hamm would have made it to state in any of the other three regionals,? coach Stuart Holmes said. ?Ours was very tough.?
Coming?Grant Shewey won?t have far to travel for state competition.
Hillsboro High School will host the Class 3-2-1A tournament Friday and Saturday at the Sports Complex and the Tabor College courts.
