Hillsboro wrestlers finish seventh

Lane Flaming (HHS Senior) pinning Owen O'Halloran from Hesston. Flaming finished 4th in the 182 division. Karrie Rathbone / Special to the Free PressThe Hillsboro High School wrestling team competed at the 2019 Central Central Kansas League Tournament on Friday, Feb. 8 in Larned. They placed seventh out of nine teams.

“My first reaction based on team results alone is a bit of disappointment. I really felt like we had an opportunity for at least a top-five finish as a team in a very solid CKL Tournament. To slide as low as seventh was a little discouraging,” said Coach Scott O’Hare. “On the other hand, it was good to see this level of competition right now so that everyone can see where they stand and what they need to do next week in preparation for Regionals.”

Everyone on the team placed sixth or lower. The majority of the team placed fourth or lower.

“The format of this tournament puts a high emphasis on placing in the top three in your weight. Both Raymond and Jordan came up just short in their bits to win league championships in very competitive finals matches. Jordan lost in overtime and Raymond was in a very tight 5-5 match going into the third period when he lost a scramble situation and simply tried to hold on too long before eventually getting pinned,” said O’Hare.

Raymond Johnston (16-15) scored the most team points securing 18. He took second in the 126 weight bracket. 138 Jordan Bachman (28-7) also placed second and scored 16.5 team points.

“We also had six other wrestlers finish in fourth place. Of those fourth-place finishers, Helmer had a match that he was leading and in complete control before giving up a reversal and going to his back and eventually getting pinned. Sealing a win there would have moved him into third place. Fourth place finisher Kyle Horton lost a 2-0 overtime battle in the opening round of the tournament to the eventual 152 lb champion and fifth-place finisher Tristan Rathbone lost a tight 1-0 match to the eventual runner-up at 145 lbs. Wins in these matches would have been huge for them,” said O’Hare.

The rest of the team results were:

106 Paul Glanzer (2-17) placed 4th and scored 0.0 team points.

113 Charlie Major (14-18) placed 6th and scored 1.5 team points.

160 Andre Patton (22-14) placed 4th and scored 2.0 team points.

170 Austin Rempel (15-21) placed 6th and scored 8.0 team points.

182 Lane Flaming (21-15) placed 4th and scored 2.0 team points.

220 Connor Morey (8-19) placed 4th and scored 2.0 team points.

285 Jared Janzen (4-21) placed 6th and scored 0.0 team points.

“What it really comes down to is these guys have to simply find a way to wins these tough matches. We are at a time in the season where there will be very few second chances. If they want to advance, they have to find a way to get it done,” said O’Hare. “I think the key will be their attitude, effort, and mental toughness from here on out.”

Coming – The team wrestles on Friday and Saturday at the Varsity Regionals at Freedonia High School. The Friday start time is 9:35 a.m. and Saturday starts at 7 a.m.
