Hillsboro tennis team battles at Sterling and Hesston

The Hillsboro tennis team placed third out of six teams at the Sterling Invitational on Thursday.

The Trojans finished with 33 team points to trail Claflin

(46) and Sterling (36), but finished ahead of Ellsworth (25), Nicker?son (7) and Fairfield (3).

The Trojans were led by second-place finishes by Clay Shewey in No. 1 singles and Max Thiel in No. 2 singles.

After a bye in the first round, Shewey defeated Mike Jaderston of Sterling 8-0 in the semifinals then lost to Brady Bieberle of Fairfield, 1-6, 0-6.

Thiel also enjoyed a first-round bye, then defeated Trent Musgrove of Claflin in the semifinals, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, before losing the title match to Jordan Robson of Sterling, 3-6, 1-6.

In No. 1 doubles, the Trojan duo of Ben Heyen and Taylor Hagen defeated Oller and Vest of Fairfield in the first round, 8-3, then lost to Jaderston and Stromberg of Sterling, 0-6, 0-6, in the semifinals before bouncing back with a 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 win over Buchholz and Paull of Ellsworth in the third-place match.

In No. 2 doubles, Matthew Brown and Mark Priebe defeated Dohrman and Davis of Nicker?son in the first round, 8-4, then lost to Layton Hickel and Mason Hickel of Ellsworth, 0-6, 2-6, in the semifinals and 4-6, 0-6 to Seitz and Winston of Ellsworth in the third-place match.

Hesston Invit?l?Hillsboro finished fourth out of 12 teams at the Hesston Invitational on Tuesday, April 24.

Hillsboro rolled up 92 points, compared to first-place Claflin with 152, second-place Conway Springs with 134 and third-place Hesston with 128.

Trailing Hillsboro were McPherson (90), Clay Center (67), Wichita Collegiate (56), Elyria Christian (52), Hutchinson Trinity (50), Hoisington (49), Wichita Trinity (46) and Smoky Valley (29).

The format of the tournament combined all singles players in one bracket and all doubles teams in one bracket.

In singles, Hillsboro?s Clay Shewey went 3-2, including a first-round bye, to finish in fourth place. Teammate Max Thiel went 3-2 to place 10th.

In doubles, Ben Heyen and Taylor Hagen went 2-3 to place 12th and Matthew Brown and Mark Prieb were 2-3 and 16th.

Coming?The Trojans were scheduled to compete at the MCCA league tournament Monday in Ellinwood.

On Thursday, HHS will battle at the Class 3-2-1A regional tournament in Hesston. Joining them will be Republic County, Claflin, Ellsworth, Hesston, Hutchinson Trinity, Elyria Christian and Sterling.
