With her doubles teammate Emma Heyen watching, Hillsboro?s Aubrey Meier hustles to return a shot during regionals Thursday. The twosome won their play-in match, then lost in the first round.

The Hillsboro girls? tennis season ended Thursday at the Class 3-2-1A regional tournament hosted by Hutchinson Trinity.

The only Trojan victory came in a play-in match when the HHS doubles team of Emma Heyen and Aubrey Meier, both sophomores, defeated Sarah Kenning and Angela Koehler of Hutch Trinity, 3-6, 6-3, 6-0.

That pitted Heyen and Meier against the No. 2 seeded team of Carolyn McCullers and Kacee Britton of Sterling. Hillsboro lost the match, 3-6, 0-6.

In singles play, senior Kelsey Bartel lost her opening match to the No. 3 seed, Cheyenne Thomp?son of Wabaunsee, 1-6, 6-2, 3-6, ending her participation in the single-elimination format.

Hillsboro?s second doubles team of sophomores Elise Heyen and Hayley Pankratz lost to sisters Ashley and Chelsea Stuewe of Wabaunsee, 5-7, 6-7 (4-7) in a play-in match.

?I was extremely pleased with all the girls? efforts,? said coach Bob Woelk. ?The intensity level was high, and we hustled for every point. I promised the girls they would get better as the year went on, and I have no doubt they all did. I was proud of them, and I look forward to our team being a force to be reckoned with in the next two years.?

Hillsboro?s top singles player this season, sophomore Becky Faber, did not compete in the tournament because of a death in her extended family.

Sterling won the team title with 11 points followed by Lyons 9, Hutchinson Trinity 5, Wabaunsee 3, Hillsboro 0.

Hillsboro hosted the sub-state tournament Saturday at the Sports Complex.
