Pihl finished with 26 points to lead all scorers. Dakota Kaufman led the Trojans with 13 points while Amanda Faber added 10.
The boys? game was almost a mirror opposite of the girls? contest. The Trojan boys trailed the home team throughout the first half, but Clay Shewey and Gavin Serene combined for five 3-pointers in the third quarter to lift Hillsboro to a 47-42 victory.
Shewey?s three bombs came over a span of 51 seconds, vaulting the Trojans from a 21-18 deficit into a 27-21 lead.
Shewey led the Trojans with 14 points while Serene finished with 11.
The games against Smoky Valley constituted the first round of the Cheney Cardinal Classic.The Trojans were schedule to take on the host team at Brown Gymnasium on Tuesday for the second round of pool play.
Depending on the outcome of those games, the Hillsboro team will join their counterparts from the other five schools in the tournament in Cheney on Saturday to play for a final finishing spot.
