Hillsboro, Riley Co. girls could meet for Classic title

The brackets released Monday for next week?s Trojan Classic pave the way for a possible showdown between the top two 3A girls? basketball teams in the championship game.

Hillsboro, 8-0 through last week, is the No. 1 seed in the girls? bracket while Riley County (7-0) is No. 2. The two schools are ranked the same by the Kan?sas Basketball Coaches Associa?tion.

Hillsboro will open tournament play at 4:45 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 17, against No. 8 seeded Goodland (0-8). If the Trojans win, they will meet the winner of No. 4 Wamego (5-1) and No. 5 Thomas More Prep (5-2) in the semifinals at 6:30 p.m. Friday.

On the other side of the bracket, No. 3 Republic County (7-1) will meet No. 6 Hesston (5-2) at 4:45 p.m. Monday while Riley County will meet No. 7 Winfield (2-5) at 3 p.m. Tuesday. The winners will meet at 6:30 p.m. Thurs?day.

The girls? championship game will be at 6:15 p.m. Satur?day, the third-place game at 2:45 p.m., the fifth-place game at 11:30 a.m. in Brown Gymnasium and the seventh-place game at 11:30 a.m. in the middle school gym.

For the boys, on Monday No. 2 seeded TMP (5-2) will open against No. 7 Winfield (2-4) at 3 p.m. while No. 4 Hesston (4-3) will take on No. 5 Riley County (4-3) at 8 p.m.

The No. 3-seeded Trojan boys (5-3) open play at 6:30 p.m. Tues?day against No. 6 seeded Goodland (2-4), followed by No. 1 Republic County (7-1) and No. 8 Wamego (0-8) at 8 p.m.

Should the Trojans win their opening game, they will play in the semifinals at 8 p.m. Friday against the winner of TMP versus Winfield.

The boys? championship game will be at 8 p.m. Saturday, the third-place game at 4:30 p.m., fifth-place at 1 p.m. in Brown Gymnasium and seventh-place at 1 p.m. in the middle school gym.
