Hillsboro fifth in MCAA tourney

Hillsboro finished fifth at the Mid-Central Activities Associa?tion league tournament Monday at the Sports Complex in Hills?boro.

Wichita Collegiate won the title with 77 points, followed by Smoky Valley with 69, Hesston 61, Sterling 44, Hillsboro 32, Ellinwood 30, Hoisington 29, Nickerson 13 and Haven 5.

Clay Shewey took fifth in No. 1 singles. He lost 6-1, 6-1 in the first round to Mike Jaderston of Sterling, then defeated Chaffin of Haven 9-0 and Ethan Thomas of Ellinwood 9-5.

In No. 1 doubles, Taylor Hagen and Ben Heyen lost to Liechty and Ross 0-6, 2-6 in the first round, then defeated Britton and Walton of Sterling 9-6 and Koetter and Detter of Ellinwood 9-7 to place fifth.

In No. 2 singles, Mark Prieb lost his first-round match to Caleb Wheeler of Hesston, then defeated Christian Castor of Nickerson 9-1 before losing to Cody Bryant of Ellinwood 7-9 in the match for fifth.

In No. 2 doubles, Mathew Brown and Jarod Hamm lost to Boettger and Dyck of Hesston 0-6, 1-6, to Harting and Ochs of Hoisington 0-9, and to Lyman and Corbett of Ellinwood 7-9 in the seventh-place match.

Hesston?Hillsboro finished eighth among 13 teams competing at the Hesston Invitational tennis tournament Tuesday, April 22.

The Trojans scored 44 team points. Conway Springs won the tournament with 116 points.

?The competition was excellent,? said coach Stuart Holmes. ?Our guys played well most of the day and had some nice wins.?

Clay Shewey went 4-1, but still finished only ninth in singles. He defeated Jordon Bon?trager of Hesston 8-3 in the first round, then lost to Andrew Labenz of Hutchinson Trinity 3-8 in the next round. He then beat Parker Bohm of Wichita Trinity 8-2, Tyler Single?ton of McPher?son 8-1 and Troy Gurney of Wichita Collegiate 8-3.

Mark Prieb went 1-4 at Hesston to finish 16th out of 23 entries.

He defeated Jordan Klima of Hoi?sington 8-4 in his opening round, then lost to Taylor Bieberle of Claflin 0-8, Michael Devlin of Conway Springs 3-8, Josh Lukes of McPherson 3-8 and Bohm 2-8.

In doubles, Taylor Hagen and Ben Heyen placed 18th out of 26 entries with a 2-2 record. They lost in the first round to Dahl?sten and Weaver of Hesston 5-8, defeated Holly and Pohl of Hutch Trinity 2-8 and Wooley and Bailey of Wichita Collegiate 8-2, then lost to Glaser and Hos?ney of Collegiate 3-8.

Mathew Brown and Jarod Hamm placed 21st in doubles with a 2-2 mark. They lost to Harting and Newmann of Hoi?sington 1-8 and Glaser of Hofney 6-8, then defeated Thibault and Salas of Hutch Trinity 8-5 and Holly and Pohl 8-4.

Coming?Hillsboro will enter regional play Thursday on its home courts. Joining Hills?boro at the Sports Complex will be Republic County, Claflin, Ellin?wood, Ellsworth, Hutchin?son Trinity, Elyria Christian and Sterling.

The coaches meeting is at 8 a.m.with matches starting around 9 a.m.

The top four finishers in both singles and doubles will compete at the Class 3-2-1A state tournament May 9 and 10 at the Wichita State University Tennis Center, 1847 N. Fairmount, Wichita.
