Hillsboro concludes tennis season

The Hillsboro girls’ tennis season came to a close Friday at the Class 3-2-1A regional tournament at Hesston.

Trojan pacesetter Caroline Roth, seeded seventh in singles, defeated Taryn Robl of Ellinwood, 6-0, 6-0, to start her day. She then lost to Morgan Holopirek of Hesston, 6-0, 6-0.

The loss dropped Roth to the match to determine who would go to state. She lost to Madison Thrasher of Sterling, 6-1, 6-0, to end the season.

“The singles side of the bracket was loaded with great players,” coach Bob Woelk said. “As usual, this regional will in all likelihood sweep the top spots at the state tournament. It is our misfortune to live in the toughest region in the state.”

In doubles, Ellian Weisbeck and Shelby Johnson, seeded ninth, opened with a 3-6, 7-6 (12-10), 10-5 super tiebreaker win over Kelsey Jenkins and Gia Bryant of Lyons, a team the Hillsboro girls had lost to at league the weekend before.

They then faced Olivia Brubacher and Kylie Martin of Hesston, the No. 1 seed, and lost, 6-0, 6-1.

In the qualification bracket, Weisbeck and Johnson they lost to Wichita Independent’s Sydney Hicks and Hadley Kaff, 6-2, 6-1, to end the tournament.

Hillsboro’s other doubles team of Kayla Gunn and Abby Fryhover started the day with a 6-0, 6-0, loss to Brubacher and Martin that eliminated them from the tournament.

Gracie Damon filled the other singles spot, but lost to Holopirek, 6-0, 6-0, in the first round.

“Obviously, I was disappointed that we did not qualify anyone for the state tournament,” Woelk said. “But Caroline had a good season, ending the year with a record of 18-9 in singles. In any other regional, she most likely would have finished in the top six, which would have earned her a berth at the state tournament.”
