Hillsboro boys sweep week

It was a good week to be on the Hillsboro Boys Basketball team which got two big league wins over Hoisington, 62-52, and Lyons, 62-50, last week.

Things were closer than the score would indicate against Hoisington throughout. Hillsboro held a three point lead after the first quarter and extended it to five points by the break in action, 26-21.

A big third quarter, 19-11, gave Hillsboro the needed cushion to survive a late surge by Hoisington in the fourth quarter.

“Hoisington was a good team win. The guys played hard and we were in good control most of the game,” Coach Darrel Knoll said.

Wes Shaw had a great game for the Trojans with 24 points and 14 rebounds while Darian Ratzlaff came back with 14 points, three rebounds, and six assists for the game.

Against Lyons, the Trojans got out to an early big lead which included a 24-11 run in the second quarter to go up, 34-18 at half.

“Lyons is a tough place to play, so it was a good win,” Knoll said.

Lyons made a small run in the second half, but the lead was never in jeopardy for Hillsboro.

“At times, we played great–I think our largest lead was 17 in the third quarter. We did get into some early foul trouble, but we were able to play through it,” Knoll said.

It was a balanced scoring effort for Hillsboro who was led by Shaw with 12 points and four rebounds. Caleb Rempel had 11 points and three rebounds, while Matthew Potucek had 10 points and two assists..

Coming – The boys played Nickerson at home on Tuesday. Next up is Sub-State starting on Tuesday, Feb. 25. Hillsboro is slatted to play in Marion with the following teams in their sub-state: Allen-Northern Lights, Eskridge-Mission Valley, Goessel, Herington, Marion, Rossville, and Wabaunsee.
