Hillsboro blows out Yates Center

ane Flaming and Brooks Gardner come in for a sack of the Yates Center quarterback during last week’s blowout win. Karrie Rathbone / Special to the Free PressThere was plenty of offense on hand for Hillsboro as they crushed Yates Center, 75-20, in the first round of the Kansas Class 1A Playoffs last Friday.

Brooks Gardner led the team with 109 rushing yards and two touchdowns on just 13 carries on the game. Plenty of players got chances with the ball as five different Trojans carried the ball out of the backfield.

Hillsboro got on Yates Center (2-6) quickly when Gardner busted loose on a 17-yard touchdown run early in the first quarter. Yates Center responded with a 60-yard kickoff return, but allowed 36 unanswered points to be scored by Hillsboro before the quarter would end.

By halftime, Hillsboro was up 63-7.

Jorge Hanschu was steady at quarterback, going 5-6 for 110 yards passing and three touchdowns through the air while chipping in 99-yards rushing on just four rushes and a touchdown. One of which was a 80-yard scamper to put Hillsboro up 12-7 early in the first quarter.

This week, Hillsboro will travel to SE Kansas for a matchup with Pittsburg-St. Mary’s Colgan at Pittsburg State University. The game begins at 6 p.m. Colgan is 7-2 and demolished Leon-Bluestem (1-7) in their first round game, 68-8.
