HHS track teams sixth at Hesston

The boys, led by Wes Shaw with gold-medal throws in discus (157 feet) and shot put (51-31⁄4) and a first-place high jump performance by Kaden Ward (6-2), scored 46 team points.

Garden Plain won with 113, followed by Halstead (96, Hesston (83), Smoky Valley (80), Marion (71), Hillsboro, Cheney (41), Douglass (15) and Haven (9).

Jonathan Hinerman scored Hillsboro’s only other top-three finish by placing third in the 1,600 meters (4 minutes, 50.26 seconds).

The Trojan girls, meanwhile, were led by Sienna Kaufman, who placed second in pole vault (9-0). Abby Sechrist placed third in the 800 meters (2:35.52) and Brooklyn Wiens placed third in discus (99-6).

Cheney won the team title with 127 points, followed by Hesston (115), Garden Plain (89), Marion (58), Smoky Valley (43), Hillsboro (36), Douglass (32), Halstead (28), Haven (19) and Sunrise Christian Academy (9).

“This meet is our last chance to prepare for our upcoming league and regional meets,” coach Dennis Boldt said. “It is important that athletes with multiple events balance getting from one place to another.”

Coming—Hillsboro will host the Central Kansas League meet Thursday at Joel H. Wiens Stadium. Events begin at 2 p.m.

The Trojans’ Class 2A regional will be May 19 at Herington.
