HHS track places first, second at Fairfield

The Hillsboro track team opened its season Tuesday with a first-place finish by the boys and a second-place by the girls in a five-team Central Kansas Track League meet at Fairfield.

The Trojan boys rolled up 129 points to edge Inman with 126. Burrton scored 35, Haven 27 and Fairfield 22.

Claiming gold medals for Hillsboro were Shaq Thiessen in the long jump (20 feet, 6 inches), Jordan Riggs in the javelin (152-0), Mitchell Day in the 100 meters (11.97 seconds), Bret Mueller in the 800 (2 minutes, 11 seconds), Joel Allen in the 1,600 (4:54) and 3,200 (10:14) and the 4×800 team of Allen, Mueller, Justin King and Josh Richert (9:10).

The girls finished with 61 points to trail Haven at 132. Fairfield scored 58, Burrton 41 and Inman 16.

Callie Serene was one of two Hillsboro girls to win an event, claiming the 800 with 2:35. Heather Mayfield won the high jump by clearing 4-6.

?Being the first meet of the year, I thought we had some very good performances,? coach Dennis Boldt said. ?The first meet always gives us an opportunity to see where we are in our events and where we need to work on technique as well as conditioning.

?I am proud of their efforts today, and am excited about getting our season started.?

Coming?Hillsboro was scheduled to compete at a CKTL meet in Moundridge Tuesday. Next Tuesday, the team will travel to Sterling for a CKTL meet.
