The Hillsboro boys? track and field team opened the competitive season with a first-place finish at the five-school Central Kansas Track League meet in Fairfield last Tuesday.
The girls? team, led by three individual gold medals from Dakota Kaufman, placed third.
The Trojan boys rolled up 99 points to outpace Haven and Halstead with 81 each, Langdon-Fairfield with 43 and Burrton with 41.
Winning gold in running for HHS were Joel Allen in the 3,200-meter (10 minutes, 54.74 seconds), Nathan Vogel in the 400 (56.96), Josh Richert in the 800 (2:25), the 4×400 team of Ben Bebermeyer, Tyler Proffitt, Allen and Vogel and the 4×800 team of Matt Richert, Josh Richert, Allen and Vogel.
In field events, Jordan Riggs won gold in javelin (130 feet, 10 inches) and Beber?meyer in triple jump (31-4).
The HHS girls scored 68 points to finish behind Langdon-Fairfield (116) and Haven (72) and ahead of Halstead (48) and Burrton (41).
Kaufman?s three gold medals came in the 100 (13.20), the javelin (103-6) and the long jump (16-51?2). Hillsboro?s other gold medal came from Callie Serene in the 800 (2:34.18).
?It was a great start to our season, particularly with the boys finishing first in the team standings,? coach Dennis Boldt said. ?Individ?ually, we had great effort by each and every team member.
?We look to develop throughout the season, and I like what I saw today,? he added.
?I will also say this: Having the track facility that the patrons of this community have graciously provided has already made an impact on this program. ?
Coming?Hillsboro was scheduled to host a CKTL meet Tuesday (April 13) and will compete next at a CKTL?event at Goessel next Tuesday (April 20).
